Big Island Expedition
July 31-August 5, 2026
(Maximum number of campers: 20)
This program is designed to educate campers about the geology, astronomy, ecology, and culture of Hawai'i in an expedition format. Campers will explore an active volcano, experience Hawai'ian culture, snorkel above coral reefs, hike through dense tropical forests, visit rarely seen Hawai'ian sea turtle nesting sites, view stars and galaxies from Mauna Loa, and even have time to play on the beach. Participants must be age 12-13 (rising seventh graders). Campers stay at the Kilauea Military Camp, located a short walk from the edge of Kilauea caldera!
If you would like more information, we will have an information night.
The trip leaders will be Dietrich Nebert, Brian Black, and Dale Petersen. Your child’s leaders will also be accompanied by other instructional experts and scientists who do research and live on the Big Island. We also have a number of parent/guardian chaperone positions available.
